A home is one of those things that's easy to take for granted until it's missing. Stability, safety, a place to close the door and just be — so much else in life depends on having that foundation first. Habitat's approach of pairing volunteer labor with an affordable mortgage, rather than simply giving a house away, has always struck me as a thoughtful balance between help and dignity.
I like that families build alongside the volunteers rather than just receiving a finished product. There's something meaningful about a home that was partly built by the hands of the person who's going to live in it — it becomes less like charity and more like a shared investment in a family's future.
