Hunger has a way of hiding in plain sight. It's rarely the person you'd expect — often it's a coworker, a neighbor, a family a few streets over quietly stretching a budget that doesn't stretch far enough. What I appreciate about Feeding America is that it works through local food banks already embedded in those communities, rather than trying to run everything from the outside.
There's also something practical and unsentimental about the model that I respect: rescuing food that would otherwise go to waste and getting it to people who need it. It's not a flashy kind of giving, but it's the kind that shows up at dinner tables the same week the gift is made.
